Shepherd John Stanesby had resumed the old tradition of taking his sheep over the half-mile causeway to graze on Burgh Island in Devon, which is usually cut off by the tide and only passable twice a day. Until John revived the use of the island pasture, sheep had not been taken across for 50 years.
